What is menopause?

Menopause marks the end of your menstrual cycle. A woman is said to be in menopause when she has no menstrual cycle for one year. Menopause typically happens in your 40s or 50s. Women may experience menopause earlier if they have a hysterectomy, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or primary ovarian insufficiency resulting in premature menopause.

What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause, when your body’s production of estrogen and progesterone may change unexpectedly, causing menopausal symptoms. On average, women are in perimenopause for four years before their menstrual cycle stops completely.

What are the symptoms?

As your estrogen and progesterone production decreases, you may experience a number of physiological and psychological changes. Physiological changes include night sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, dryness of skin, fatigue, hair loss, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular problems. Psychological changes include mood swings, irritability, insomnia, and depression.

What herbal treatments are available?

Herbal natural remedies include the use of phytoestrogens, compounds that occur naturally in plant. The most popular choice used to be an extract from Black Cohosh; however, several clinical studies show that it is no more effective than a placebo, and multiple side effects were observed with its use (reference).

The National Institutes of Health reports that genistein, a major isoflavone aglycone of soybean, can be detrimental to health – exposure to genistein for two years caused mammary gland / pituitary adenoma in female rates (NIH & FDA – National Toxicology Program, Geninstein Final, January 2008).  In fact, daily intake above 30 mg daily of isoflavone aglycone is not permitted by the Food Safety Commission of the Japanese government due to toxicity.
